CANNA indica

Description

Herbaceous perennial plant, consisting of a large branched rhizome from which a lot of stems radiate till reaching a maximum height of 1.50 m. The ovate and lance-shaped leaves are very decorative and of a bluish-green color, in some cases they are green or brown with contrasting margins. Large flowers are brought at the apex of stems and can be of different colour (white, red, yellow and pink).

Suggestions

It's possible to place this plant in full sun, even if in the hottest areas it's better put it in semi-shaded positions. It prefers soft, moist and rich soils. Although it can tolerate light droughts, it needs regular irrigations between spring and summer. It tolerates light frosts too, but in the coldest areas it's better protect the rhizome or even remove it from the soil in the winter. It's good for pot cultivation and ideal for stains and borders, in flower beds, even associated with other flowering species.
