DASYLIRION longifolia

Description

Native to Central America drylands, it has a single, woody and robust stem up to 2 metres tall, from where a thick apical tuft of compressed leaves smartly hangs down. This evergreen plant grows very slowly, it needs light positions as well as loose and dry soils. Mature plants produce long and very showy inflorescences. It could be grown in pot too and it is an excellent exemplar for dry gardens.

Suggestions

Ensure a sunny position, avoiding water stagnations above all if the soil is perfectly drained. It needs to remove the dried basal leaves in order to make visible the trunk. This plant doesn't require any maintenance and it tolerates long periods of drought once having taken root. It tolerates cold, but in case of low temperatures it better to repair the crown using nonwovens.
