KNIPHOFIA tysonii

Description

Herbaceous, perrennial and evergreen tuft plant which can reach 1,50 metres of height. It naturally spreads in many regions of South Africa. It is characterized by thick tufts of web-like and fleshy leaves which are of a bright green color, strongly keeled and very long. They usually fall on the ground giving the plant a messy and wild aspect. From late spring and throughout the summer, some stems with tubular flowers rise from the tufts and gather in thick clusters. Flowers, native to the bottom of the inflorescence, change color as they grow up, turning from red to orange, and then to yellow.

Suggestions

It needs sunny positions. It adjusts to any kind of soil preferring the sandy and fertile enough ones, provided they are well drained. It tolerates drought, but in spring-summer it's recommended to irrigate regularly in order to achieve an optimal development. It tolerates wintry frosts, provided they aren't intense and lasting. You should remove wilted flowers in order to improve blooming. It is suitable to pot growth, and if it is used in isolated scrubs, mono-specie borders or associated to other plants with contrasting foliage and flowering.
