DASYLIRION serratifolium

Description

Native to the arid areas of Central America, this plant has a single, woody and robust stem, up to a couple of meters high, from which a thick apical tuft of long and flexible leaves branches off, forming a spherical crown up to two meters wide. This evergreen plant grows very slowly and needs bright locations and generally loose and dry soils. Mature plants produce long, very showy inflorescences. It can also be grown in pots and is very elegant as a specimen in dry gardens.

Suggestions

Ensure sunny positions. Even if it is native to desert areas, it can also be grown in moist zones provided that the soil is well drained. It needs to remove the dried basal leaves in order to make visible the trunk. This plant doesn't require any maintenance and it tolerates long periods of drought once having taken root.
